Professional Profile - August 2011: Tony Potts Director & Photographer

Over the years Tony has developed a unique and distinctive approach specially suited to directing hair, beauty and testimonial commercials, which has found favour with multinational clients such as; Procter and Gamble, Lever and Kitchen and L’Oreal on a regular basis worldwide, particularly in South East Asia, South America and Australia.

Although Tony has lately worked extensively in Asia (keeping an apartment in Bangkok), he has over recent years been working consistently for the Latin American market and a variety of other cultures. Tony’s client base extends worldwide, including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Italy, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Venezuela, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.

Tony’s career started as young man exploring the world as a fashion modeI working with such world renowned fashion photographers as Helmut Newton, Denise Piel, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson and Toscani and many more. As Tonys says…..”I kept my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open”

The knowledge and experience Tony gained working with these greats of the fashion industry inspired him to get behind the camera and develop his own shooting style. He studied at the Australian Centre of Photography, got a job as an assistant and then fashion photography consumed his life for the next decade and more.

“I set out to “capture moments” of sensuality in every woman, regardless of their situation or environment. I wanted to find and film this innate sensuality in a natural, confident way that reveals the soul”

This ambition to “capture the moment” led to his desire to direct live action and prolong that moment on film.

Tony’s directing is very much about creating a situation that allows for the “reality” to be felt by the actors, and the moment to be seen “by chance” on film. Tony’s past experience in front of the camera allows him a unique understanding of how best to inspire that feeling of reality and simplicity and his photographic eye ensures a sensual imagery.

In Tony’s words…..“I believe that it is the director’s responsibility to assemble the very best people and ultimately aim to exceed the client’s expectations with thorough pre production, production and post production, paying careful attention to detail and ensuring that my responsibility to production company, agency and client is honest, well balanced and creative”.
“I am the captain of a large team and with that comes responsibility for the success or failure of a film to realise the ideas created by the agency and approved in principle by the client. This position calls for strength of character and the courage of ones convictions. In all my years as a photographer and film director I have never gone over budget.”

Tony’s most recent work has been in Australia and Mexico. He was recently commissioned by Priceline to photograph for exhibition special moments relating to 6 different charities. The experience was life changing for Tony and was well received by critics. You can see a selection of these shots on the web site.
Tony has also been busy the last month directing a series of 8 TVCs for Olay in Mexico City.

View Tony Pott's Showreel

For greater detail visit Tony’s web site for the full “picture” www.tonypotts.com.

Tony is based in Sydney AUSTRALIA and is a freelance director.

Contacts:

Web: www.tonypotts.com
Email: tony@tonypotts.com
Mobile: +61 408 605030

Since their big splash as the Producers/Directors/Editors on the first official Make Poverty History in 2007 with Songstress Missy Higgins, Lloyd and Spencer have been busy.
“We’re commited to doing great work with great people” Spencer says “It’s great to be able to bring passion to the workplace and I always find this philosophy to be contagious in any team.”

The pair were honoured to be the editors on AFI award winner Nicholas Hope’s short film “Complicity” which won a spot in the Sydney Film Festival. “The film industry is uniquely rewarding” Says Lloyd, “When you finish a project you have your own sense of pride and then once it is shared you get to be proud all over again.”

Last year continued with 2 edited works going off to L.A. shorts and other festivals across America whilst their long short “The Tragedy of Gerald Berdmen” was selected to screen at Bondi Short Film Festival.

Special Profile - May 2011: Donate Life & Transplant Australia

We're proud to be a Donate Life partner to Transplant Australia.

This important organisation has a mission is to educate Australians about this critiically important issue of life saving organ donations.

Their key message is to

- Discover the facts about organ and tissue donation

- Decide about organ and tissue donation

- Discuss your decision with your family and friends

From the Transplant Australia website:

About donation

This wish to help others becomes a reality if Australians learn about organ and tissue donation and make the decision to become a donor. Families also need to know the wishes of the potential donor. This means discussing, understanding and accepting each family member's decision. If families are unaware of their deceased loved one's decision about organ and tissue donation, they are less likely to give consent for donation. Families also need to know individuals' wishes about tissue donation.

Even if you are registered as an organ donor, your family will still be asked to confirm your wishes and give their consent. It's important that they know your wishes.

The chance to save lives

Around 1700 Australians are waiting for a life-saving or life-improving transplant. Sadly, people die waiting for the gift of a heart, liver, kidney, lung or pancreas transplant.

For many others, the wait means long weeks or months in hospital or several trips to hospital every week for treatment such as dialysis. For some, it means being attached to an oxygen tank 24 hours a day. One donor can save the lives of up to 10 people & improve the lives of dozens more.

Australia's record of successful transplants is among the best in the world. Yet, in 2009, only 799 Australians received transplants last year from 247 donors. Our challenge is to greatly increase that number - and help those on the waiting list.

Strong safety laws and effective health services have reduced the number of people suffering fatal brain injuries. This in part has contributed to Australia having one of the lowest organ and tissue donation rates in the developed world; few Australians will die in such a way that they can be considered for organ donation.

We want Australians to discover the facts about organ and tissue donation, to make an informed decision about their choice to become a donor and to encourage their family members to know each others' wishes. The family's consent will always be requested.
Who can donate?

* Almost everyone can help others through organ and tissue donation.
* The governing factors are where and how a donor dies and the condition of their organs and tissue.
* All major religions support organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
* The aged and people with chronic health conditions can be donors. Only a few medical conditions preclude donation of organs.
* People can also donate a kidney or part of their liver while they are still alive, though this is usually restricted to those wanting to save the life of someone they know.
* A donor's gift and a patient's hopes are in good hands. Australia has a world class reputation for successful transplant outcomes.

A question of timing

Timing is critical. Tissues can be donated up to 24 hours after death, irrespective of where or how the donor died. The tissues are stored and called on when needed.

Organ donors must have died while in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital and on a ventilator that keeps their organs functioning artificially for a limited time. Most organ donors suffer a stroke or bleeding in the brain or have an accident or head trauma that causes brain death.

The very nature of these circumstances means there is usually no chance to discuss donation with the person, leaving the decision to the family. It is much easier for the family to make the decision if they know the wishes of their loved one.
Family support

Families faced with giving consent to organ and tissue donation are dealing with loss and grief. Under such circumstances they can be helped by knowing that their family member wished to benefit others.

Families are given appropriate time and organ donation information. They are given support by trained DonateLife™ organ donor coordinators and receive, at no cost, bereavement support by professional counsellors.

Find more information

Donate Life on Facebook

Australian Organ Donor Registry

Panavision has taken delivery of the highly anticipated Sony PMW-F3 . This newly designed compact camera, with its Super 35 CMOS EXMOR branded sensor, is able to take both PL mounted lenses such as Zeiss and Cookes and the whole range of PV mounted spherical primes and zooms.
Coupled with its small compact form factor and its ability to shoot with Cine lenses make the Sony PMW-F3 the perfect B-Camera for those tight shots or on its own as it has a great high end look with its low end price point.

The Panavision Sony PMW-F3 Production & Hand Held kits are designed for the professional cinematographer in mind with Arri matte box, follow focus and Element Technica Mantis hand held rigs, with Panavision’s own modifications such as shoe adapter threads for on board monitoring, film plane tape hook and 12v power extender for accessories.

What makes the Sony F3 stand out from other mid range cameras and HDSLRs is its connectivity .
December 2010: Cinematographer Pieter de Vries ACS

Professional Profile - December 2010: Cinematographer Pieter de Vries ACS

Pieter de Vries ACS is one of Australia’s most well known cinematographers and has photographed many important and acclaimed television series over his career.

His work schedule ranges across a variety of areas relating to the film and television industry – foremost as a working cinematographer, but also as a writer contributing to various professional and enthusiasts magazines. Pieter has a long association as manufacturer's a industry representative and cinematography consultant.

He has received international recognition for cinematography and received high praise and numerous awards.

He worked with US director James Cameron as topside DP on the 3D Imax film, “Ghosts of the Abyss”, revisiting the wreck of the Titanic, using the Sony/Panavision High Definition 3D format.

“RAT” and “Animalicious” are both co-productions with National Geographic and Beyond Productions. “RAT” earned him the Australian Cinematographer of the Year Award at the 1998 Australian Cinematographers Society Awards. His work on this film additionally received an Emmy nomination.

Pieter strongly believe in sharing knowledge and when he’s not working as a cinematographer, he’s showing others his craft. The role of educator takes a considerable slab of time as the search for knowledge grows in step with the development of new technology.

Over the past few years there has been a revolution in video making - DSLR's like the Canon 5D Mark II and even a consumer level model from Sony, the NEX-VG10 have opened up the possibility of making full HD movies with an almost cinematic quality.

Stills photographers have been fascinated with the potential of the new features but have often floundered when they realise that making good short movies is nowhere as easy as it looks.
He has teamed up with one of Australia's finest photographers, Nick Rains to offer a series of DSLR workshops and seminars aimed at anyone who has recognised the need to incorporate video into their businesses.

Pieter brings decades of experience as a cinematographer working with high end video and film cameras, and Nick offers the perspective of 28 years as a stills photographer who has recognised and developed the potential of HD video for his business.
Pieter: “it is certain that understanding and delivering mixed media content will be an incredibly useful tool as the publishing industry transitions to delivery on tablet computers, phones and iPads etc. Print clients are beginning to request video clips from their stills photographers so an understanding of how to produce decent footage will be essential in the future”.

Pieter de Vries has a comprehensive website, www.pieterdevries.com.au that encompasses video and pdf tutorials plus answers to many common video and lighting questions. He conducts weekend workshops, one-on-one sessions and targeted corporate training in video and lighting techniques.

In a recent article for Better Digital Camera magazine Pieter, talking about the use of available light in video production writes:
“Photographers and cinematographers alike observe light and the way it influences things. It could be harsh summer sunlight that casts strong unappealing overhead shadows, or a ray of warm afternoon light as it rakes across the landscape after a rain shower. Light, and the way it falls, sets a mood.

"The challenge for the cinematographer is to be able to take advantage of these naturally occurring lighting conditions.”

Piet contributes to magazines including Mac World, Better Digital Camera, Content and Technology and Miller Sharp Shooters.

We will be introducing a number of segments from Pieter on showreelfinder.com next year.
